Music in 2016
I'm enjoying dancehall rhythms / riddemz after a long time and I'm checking out the video's with the corner of my eye on my phone as I'm learning some new ish... (PHP coding is going to be a nice bag or tricks to have in my repertoire of skills.)
I am at first numb to the fact that the music videos are littered with a bevy of beauties every other scene as that's why I like dancehall. The rhythmic writhing of the female dancehall aficionado, are fun to gyrate with. Nothing wrong with that!
But I then noticed a socially conscious video of a gardener character who makes a simple meal at his squalid cabin somewhere - I assume Jamaica of course but not dissimilar to what you would find anywhere in Africa. His daughter approaches - and he hands her a single denomination and she is expressly disappointed with her fathers pocket money offering.
Next scene this guy is at work - gardening at some wealthier chaps domicile and at some point he is peaking into the house to what I'm assuming at the time is curiosity of how is this dude living. He pictures himself living like this - or we are observing the Jaguar driving guys family. Young lass eating an apple and cross fade to his simple meal fades back to microwave popcorn and so it goes.
The video ends with the wealthier family being the recipients of uninvited guests who are down with redistribution of wealth. Somehow I found this very poignant. It is at this point the music videos that follow aren't all that enticing as they all follow the same recipe. Sex - money - power... you know the trappings that we all aspire to at some point in our lives.
It got me wondering - what would happen is say a Harvard educated African would sing about for entertainment purposes. What would their lyrics be about... would they necessarily have a different value proposition imbued in their lyrics? I'm never one to prescribe to causation being tied to educational accomplishments and that simply çoz a mutha fucker is schooled by some Ivy league institution they would be spout some intelligent shit. No.
I can't help but wonder. They wouldn't be tied to the normal rags to riches script would they? Dance monkey dance!! If everyone likes you - your life could change and all the material trappings will be yours. Perhaps they are out there - I just need to expand my entertainment net. But for now - I'm just going to MASH IT UP!
